THE CHAMPAGNE OF BEERS

Man, I had the strangest dream the other night that a serpent bearing a golden chalice visited me. I woke up, turned on my Spiderman night-light, and consulted Klaus Vollmar’s “The Little Giant Encyclopedia of Dream Symbols.” According to Vollmar, the chalice may either represent suffering or death or the search for a higher goal. For obvious reasons, I went with Option #2. He also indicated that a chalice could hold a liquid equivalent to my emotions and needs. I interpreted this to mean it was time to have an adult beverage, and made it my goal to do so immediately. Granted, it was 4 a.m., but serious drinkers know that’s it’s ALWAYS happy hour somewhere in the world.

So what’s the first thing I see when I open my fridge? You got it — Krait Prestige Champagne Lager, which is made by the brewmasters at ... (cue eerie music) … COBRA beer! That would explain the serpent in my dream, just as the jambalaya left over from my annual Mardi Gras party explained the virulent vapors emanating from my fridge. But about that drink…

As the name implies, Krait Prestige Champagne Lager is essentially extra-bubbly beer with a whopping eight percent alcohol content by volume. As Samuel L. Jackson might say, “It’ll get ya’ drunk!” It’s double fermented, which in technical terms means they ferment once, then wash, rinse, soak, and repeat. Cobra claims Krait Prestige is both the only lager and pilsner-type beer to be refermented in the bottle, and who was I to argue at four in the morning? They also boast of a brewing process similar to the one used by Trappist monks in Belgium. And Vollmar says dreams about monks mean you’re self-disciplined so, of course, the message here is please drink responsibly. Krait Prestige is available in 375 ml ($5.50) and 750 ml ($12) bottles.
