Doing Things The Gonzo Way

P8080034

The Imbiber’s good friend Anita Thompson was in LA this week for a signing of her new book, The Gonzo Way: A Celebration of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. It’s a must-read for fans of Anita’s late husband, as well as anyone who – you know – just gets it.

The writer Tom Wolfe once described Hunter S. Thompson as the finest comic writer of the 20th century. Thompson was this and more, an apt observer of the American scene for almost four decades, the founding father of "Gonzo Journalism," and an inspiration to many. Through his writings, he examined the loss of American innocence in the latter part of the 20th century and, as a "bull who carried his own china shop around with him," was never afraid to confront the truth head-on.

In The Gonzo Way, Anita Thompson pays tribute to her late husband as a writer and as a citizen, through her own words and through interviews with those who knew him best, including Tom Wolfe, George McGovern, and Douglas Brinkley. With elegant prose and entertaining anecdotes, she reveals a Hunter Thompson who was much more than a mere embodiment of sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll.

Feeling Oh So Fine at Food & Wine
By Dan Dunn

Your Imbiber recently attended the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen taking in all the alcohol … er, action at the industry’s most hallowed annual event. Here are a few observations:

*** There are two phases to all-day drinks festivals. Phase I is where you can still count the number of drinks you’ve had; Phase II is where you just count the hours you’ve been drinking, figuring your burn rate is about six or seven drinks an hour — it’s not unlike the drug guys in movies who weigh the money instead of counting it.
*** The Macallan 30-year-old Sherry Oak single malt tastes like fruitcake for big people. Aging it in sherry casks instead of those used for bourbon provides more texture and volume. Aging it thirty years also adds to the cost — $750 per bottle. But we’re worth it, right?
*** Celebrated wine guru Josh Wesson knows more about pairing vino with chocolate than any other person on the planet. Google “Josh Wesson Chocolate” and see for yourself. To read the rest click here...
