Matchups

For the United States and England, the scenario is clear: Win and you're in. The pre-tournament picks to top this group each have a pair of draws and a mere two points going into these final games. There are various if-then statements (if England loses to Slovenia, then the U.S. can advance by drawing with Algeria), but really -- both teams need a win for confidence's sake. The table wouldn't be so wide-open (if England and the U.S. both lose, Algeria comes in second) if the other two teams in the group were easy outs. Slovenia jumped to a 2-0 lead against the US before an epic comeback by the Yanks that would have been a win had the referee not unjustly nullified a late Maurice Edu goal. Algeria played a befuddled England to a scoreless draw. For the U.S., the key is likely Landon Donovan, whose play in the second half against Slovenia rescued the team from the jaws of defeat. Donovan has sometimes seemed reluctant to carry the team on his back, but it's make-or-break time here and he seems primed to come through. For England? At least one of their ineffective marquee players -- Gerrard, Lampard, and Rooney -- will need to get it together if the Three Lions are to challenge Slovenia. This is group-stage soccer at its best: All teams are motivated to play their hardest, and nobody's booked a spot in the next round. Keep that remote handy.
